Transporting your pet can be a stressful experience for both you and your beloved pet. Air Namibia is committed to providing caring, comfortable, stress-free service for both of you.
Pet Travel Services
The carriage of pets in the aircraft cabin is not permitted, with the exception of "seeing-eye dogs."
In general pet travel service allows you to check in and collect your pet from the cargo terminals at your flight's departure and arrival airports.
In both cases, your pet will travel in full comfort in the air-conditioned cargo hold, located just beneath the passenger cabin.
Arrangements:
As advance arrangements for pet travel services are required, please alert your travel agent or local Air Namibia office at the time of booking that you will be traveling with your pet to ensure an easy journey for all. Our staff will check on space availability and provide advice on the regulations and requirements for the carriage of pets to your country of destination and/or transit points.
Charges:
Pets - together with their containers - will be treated as excess baggage and charged accordingly before being transported to the cargo hold.
Essential Documents and Health Requirements:
Please ensure that you have the following documents ready for your pet, at least seven days prior to departure:
- Valid export/import permits from the relevant governments of your destination/transit countries.
- Valid health and rabies vaccination certificates from appropriate government authorities of your destination/transit countries.
- Any additional or special documents that may be required by governments of your destination/transit countries Note: Please also ensure that your pet meets the appropriate quarantine requirements. Your pet may be subjected to quarantine on arrival at your expense. The quarantine period may vary, at the discretion of your destination(s) veterinary authorities.
Comfort and Care
Animals travel under less stress when they become accustomed to their shipping container before they travel. To familiarize your pet with its container, place a favourite toy or treat inside the containers to create a positive and comfortable association.
Whenever possible, book a direct, non-stop flight and avoid holiday or weekend travel. Consider schedules that minimize temperature extremes—for example, try to avoid travel during excessively hot or cold periods. Morning or evening flights are preferable during the summer months.
Container Requirements
The design and construction of the container must conform to IATA LIVE ANIMALS REGULATIONS. In general, you will have to provide your pet with a correct-sized, well-ventilated, and leak-proof container which meets the following requirements:
- Enough space for them to turn about normally while standing
- Enough space for them to stand and sit erect and lie in a natural position
- Adequate ventilation on at least 3 sides (with the majority of the ventilation on the upper part of the container)
- Food and water troughs accessible for replenishment from outside of the container
- If wooden crates are used, the sides must be at least 0.5 inch thick
Suitable pet containers are usually available in most professional pet stores. Feeding and watering instructions must be affixed to the container. As our handling agents would like to address your pet by their name, it would be useful if you could indicate your pet's name on the container, as well.
Excess baggage charges
Piece Concept
The excess baggage charges apply from Europe to Windhoek, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Luanda return.

Insurance and baggage liability limitations
Whilst we will make every attempt to ensure your baggage is handled with care, you should know that Air Namibias' liability for loss, delay or damage to baggage is limited unless a higher value is declared in advance and additional charges paid.
The extent of airline liability is not based on the weight of the luggage nor its value. Air Namibia does not accept liability for fragile, valuable, perishable articles or baggage which is packed in damaged or unsuitable containers.
Under the Conditions of Carriage we accept no liability for the loss of jewellery, other valuables and money contained in checked baggage. You are advised to keep valuables, important documents and money either on your person or in your cabin baggage. We strongly recommend all passengers obtain adequate travel insurance cover prior to their journey.
If your checked baggage is missing, one of our passenger agents will be pleased to complete a Property Irregularity Report (P.I.R.) for you. It is very important that you provide the agent with as much information as possible about the bag, including a good description of all contents, as this will be of great help in locating it. All information gathered will be entered into our WorldTracer Baggage tracing system, which is used by most airlines worldwide. Our local representative will contact you during your stay at your destination to keep you informed on the status of our search and will also inform you about possible compensation limits and reimbursement procedures for any emergency purchases.
New: You can also monitor the status of your missing or delayed baggage online with the WorldTracer Baggage tracing system. Enter the reference number from your P.I.R. and your last name to access details of your file. Access to your file will allow you to see (1) if we have located your baggage and (2) if delivery of your baggage has been arranged. This direct access also allows you to send us a message about any updated information you wish to add to your file.
Once your baggage is located, all efforts will be made to deliver it to you in a secure manner, as soon as possible. The P.I.R. will include the local baggage office telephone number so that you may also inquire about the status of your bag.
Upon your return home
Once you are back home, our Central Baggage Department will be responsible for communicating with you. Please be aware that we must receive your written request for compensation within 21 days of your return. In order to evaluate your file effectively, we ask that you kindly send us the following documents to the address below: the original P.I.R./report that was provided to you, your original airline ticket (or copy of E-ticket), any applicable receipts, any other relevant supporting documentation, and a brief overview of the situation including any details of which you would like us to be aware.
For international flights: All lost/damaged baggage claims will be treated in accordance with the provisions of the Montreal Convention and its amendments.
In order to provide you with better service, Air Transat is a member of SITA WorldTracer.
Liability limitations
As Air Namibia is not signatory of the IATA Interline Agreement, we are unable to accept baggage transferred from another airline, nor can we transfer it to another airline. To ensure your baggage travels with you, please present all of your checked baggage to us at your airport of departure, when you check in. Air Transat cannot be responsible for baggage that is not checked in at that time. We thank you for your understanding.
Please note that Air Transat is not responsible for valuables, including but not limited to: fragile or perishable articles, currencies, electronics, keys, eyeglasses and eyewear, computers, medication and small medical devices placed in checked baggage. These items must always remain in your possession inside carry-on baggage. See What you can bring for size and weight.
All sporting equipment is accepted only with a signed Limited Release, releasing Air Transat from any claim in regards to damage. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you arrange travel insurance prior to your trip, to cover all such goods. Consult your travel or insurance agent. See What you can bring for size and weight.
Should you be travelling with a bag that is already damaged, one that is showing signs of age and wear, and/or packed beyond capacity, you will be asked to sign a Limited Release Form to limit the airline's liability in this respect, before this item is accepted at check-in. We thank you for your understanding.
Air Transat will do everything possible to carry your checked luggage on the same flight as you. However, should your checked baggage be carried on a subsequent flight (for safety, security or operational reasons), rest assured that it will be delivered to you free of charge, as rapidly as possible, unless applicable laws require you to be present for Customs clearance.

We will have no liability to you for the loss of or damage to any item that the airport security personnel, acting in accordance with government regulations, remove from you or your Baggage, even if the airport security personnel give the items to us.
New Cabin Items Restrictions
This to bring to your attention that the Air Namibia Authority - SW has announced the introduction of cabin Items restrictions as part of a global precautionary measure to protect aircraft against possible liquid explosive threats. These rules are aligned to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
All passengers traveling on international flights from Namibia or transiting Windhoek to connect on International flights will therefore be restricted from carrying certain liquids, aerosols and gels in the cabin of aircraft.
Sealed transparent bag
Passengers flying to any international destinations out of Windhoek will be required to place essential liquids to be carried on board in a re-sealable clear plastic bag with a capacity of not more than one litre. Each item containing liquid cannot exceed 100ml in quantity and must fit comfortably inside of the sealed bag. When proceeding through airport security checkpoints, the bag must be separated from any other cabin baggage. Exempted are liquids required for medical purposes including baby food.
Duty free purchases
Any duty free liquid, gel or aerosol products purchased after security checkpoints should be placed in special security bags by the store and customers connecting to further destinations are advised to keep these sealed throughout their journey. If these limitations are not adhered to, items will be confiscated by airport security and airlines will unfortunately not be in a position to recover these for customers.
Check-in
Travelers are urged to prepare for the new rules in the pre travel stage of their trip and allow extra time at check-in and security check points arriving at least three hours before the flight departure.
Baggage at Check-in
When you check-in, you may be asked some questions about your baggage:
- Did you pack your own bags?
- Are you aware of all the contents of your baggage?
- Has your baggage been left unattended or out of your sight since you packed it?
We recommend you take anything you may need on the flight with you, including medication and keys. All medication should have a professional pharmaceutical label on the container if you are transporting medication in your carry-on luggage. If you require a medical syringe, you must have the needle guard intact.
All checked baggage must have your name, address and telephone number or email on the outside of the bag. You are strongly encouraged to put your name and address on the inside of the bag as well should the outside tag be separated from the bag. Air Namibia may refuse baggage at check-in unless it is labeled.
Excess Value Declarations and Charges
You may declare a value for your checked baggage in excess of the applicable liability limit. If you make such a declaration, you must pay additional charges in accordance with our regulations.
Our maximum liability for damaged or missing baggage under the Warsaw Convention is $20.00 US per kilogram. Air Namibia will not accept liability for valuables, fragile or perishable articles including money, jewellery, cameras, video and electronics equipment, silverware, negotiable instruments, business documents, samples, antiques, paintings, furs, manuscripts or similar items, computers and medication.
